Upper Arm Lifts on the Rise

Upper Arm Lifts on the Rise

If you were asked to name the most popular cosmetic treatments in the United States today, chances are that a surgical arm lift would not even make the list.  This is a previously obscure procedure that has rapidly gained popularity among women, in particular, during the last ten years.  The most recent statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that over 15000 women underwent an arm lift procedure during 2012.  This is an increase of over four thousand percent since the year 2000, when only 300 women across the country had one.

So, what are the reasons behind this surge in popularity?  Arm lifts, known medically as brachioplasty, will often involve liposuction and the surgical removal of excess fat from the back of the arms, resulting in a slender, more toned appearance.

The rising trend has probably resulted from a combination of factors, rather than one individual trigger.  However, recent fashions have been for tops and dresses that are sleeveless, causing some women to feel self-conscious about the appearance of their arms.  Rather than covering them up by wearing a jacket, increasing numbers of women are opting for surgery, enabling them to show off the shape of their arms with pride.

Another notable reason has been reported by a large number of plastic surgeons.  During the initial pre-surgery consultation, many of the women requesting arm lifts have cited the First Lady, Michelle Obama, as being their inspiration.  Often seen, due to her choice of sleeveless outfits, the toned arms of Michelle Obama have made many women realize that they would like to do something to improve their own arms.  Diet and exercise often prove ineffective at removing large volumes of fat from this area of the body.

Before you make your decision about having the arm lift procedure, you should think carefully   about the pros and cons.  You may be happy with the new shape of your arms, but if excess skin needs to be removed in a brachioplasty procedure, then you will be left with a scar.  Liposuction may be a better option if there is not too much excess skin, or if the skin has good elasticity.  Discuss the options fully with your chosen surgeon before you agree to undergo any treatment.

Angelina Jolie taking Preventive Actions

The news of Angelina Jolie has struck a cord with many women around the world who are at an increased risk for breast cancer and contemplating their options to lower that risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer for women in the United States and the leading cause for cancer death for all races and origins. It is reported that in 2009, 211,731 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,676 died from complications related to it. Making the risk even higher for a portion of the female population is a mutation on the BRCA1 gene. After seeing her mother die from cancer at the age of 56, removing the increased risk by having a double mastectomy seemed like a viable option for Jolie. A beautiful, young and vivacious women, many are questioning whether the move was too drastic, or completely warranted considering the consequences of her genetics.

Angelina Jolie taking Preventive Actions

In recent decades the BRCA1 gene mutation has been identified to increase a women’s risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Although there is differences in what the gene means to the individual woman, it greatly increases the chance that over the course of their lifetime they will have to fight to survive against it. What seems like a exaggerated move to many made complete sense for Jolie as her odds of developing breast cancer went from 87% to less than 5% after her breast removal surgery.

Although there have been advances made in breast cancer treatment, prevention is the best assurance against it. Having a mastectomy is a very complex procedure and one that should not be entered into lightly. It is something that does not come without its own sets of risks and alters the self image for many women. However, with many advances being made for breast enhancement and reconstruction, the aesthetics of the surgery may not override the benefit of it for those who are not willing to take the chances of struggling with breast cancer in the future.

The decision to have the mastectomy for Jolie was based on her own experiences with her mother and her desire to not let history repeat itself for her children. Until there are better advancements in the cure for breast cancer, a breast cancerappears to be the one step which can empower a woman to fight against it before the fight has even begun. When a woman whose personal appearance is as celebrated as Angelina Jolie is willing to take the leap of faith, it has potential consequences for women around the world who are considering making the same move. Whether it will be enough to save her from the same battle millions of women undertake, or the one her mother lost, in the future remains to be seen. It is a decision that being thrust onto the world stage through media coverage, which will be debated and scrutinized for years to come.

Summer’s Right Around The Corner So Get Ready!

As the summer is approaching everyone is getting ready to soak up the sun, get a tan and look great! Sadly, the sun does more than just gives you a tan. The sun can cause so much damage to your skin, and can change your life forever. Skin cancer rates are on the rise and people have become more increasingly aware of the increasing rate in the United States.Appling sunscreen

How exactly do you get skin cancer? You get the skin cancer from ultraviolet radiation or UV, which is directly from the sun light, or too much sunlight. Soaking up too much sun causes premature aging, skin cancer, and sometimes damage to the eyes.

Everyone needs to be educated about the sun, and it’s causes. Sun safety includes multiple modalities of sun protection, as well as going to the dermatologist or plastic surgeons for skin maintenance.

There are so many simple ways to help prevent the UV rays touching your skin, or to help put up a shield for you to protect you from the sun. Some easy ways are: sunscreen, wearing hats, sunglasses and umbrellas. If you are knowingly more susceptible to sunburn or skin cancer runs in the family you should avoid the hotter parts of the day where the sun is strongest such as the noon hours.

When it comes to sunscreen there are numerous brands, and numbers to protect you. This all can be quite confusing. When talking about sunscreen you most commonly hear SPF which stands for sun protection factor, which is basically tell you how much this protect can protect your skin. High numbers mean the product will create a better barrier between you and the sun.

It is highly recommended 50 and above for your face if you hare fair-skinned, and at least 30 for the body. Of course as for children there are extra sensitive skin products that can help shield the sun.

You should start protecting your skin as soon as you come in the world granted that is a little hard when we are babies, so if you have your own baby you should remember that it is important from day one. Adults and children should use UV protection on a daily basis.

You can have fun in the sun; it’s just about being careful and knowing all the right ways to protect yourself from the sun.

Get Your Fresh Face With Fraxel Laser Treatment

If you are looking to improve the appearance and texture of your skin, particularly on the face, then you may be interested in a procedure known as Fraxel laser treatment.  Offered by Dr. Lou Cole to patients at his Georgia clinics, Fraxel is a non-invasive procedure that uses laser technology to rejuvenate the skin, smoothing the texture and ensuring that the pigmentation is even.  It can help to restore the fresh-faced appearance that you would have had in your youth, by stimulating the production of new tissue.

Fraxel procedures can be used to reduce the appearance of a wide variety of blemishes on the skin, including acne scars, sun damage and age spots.  It can also reduce the size of the pores and help to smooth wrinkles, particularly those around the eyes.  If you are not sure whether Fraxel laser therapy would be able to help you, then book an appointment with Dr. Lou Cole.  He will be able to assess the problem and advise you as to whether you would be a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Fraxel works by making use of a fractional resurfacing technology, which only exposes a small part of the skin to the laser at a time.  The intense light penetrates to the lower levels of the skin and stimulates the growth of collagen in this region, while leaving the rest of the layers of skin untouched.  It produces a much faster recovery time and fewer side effects than lasers that do not make use of the fractionating technology, while being equally effective.Fraxel Continue reading

Dr. Marwan R. Khalifeh Offering Laser Liposuction

Laser liposuction is one of the newest methods of performing liposuction, which is a procedure designed to remove fat cells from the body.  Removing the fat, particularly from stubborn areas which are difficult to eliminate through the methods of diet and exercise, can help to give a slimmer, more shapely appearance to the figure.  Dr. Marwan R. Khalifeh, a plastic surgeon based in Washington DC, now uses the Smartlipo triplex laser on the majority of his patients who request laser liposuction, and this is the latest model of the machine.  More traditional methods of liposuction and power-assisted liposuction are available at Dr. Khalifeh’s practice, if the procedure is being combined with other types of surgery or if a high volume of fat is being removed.

Laser liposuction has several advantages over more traditional methods.  It can be carried out under a local anaesthetic, which reduces the risks considerably by enabling you to stay awake throughout the entire procedure.  It does not require an overnight stay in hospital. Dr. Khalifeh can perform this procedure in his state of the art clinic, rather than needing to visit a hospital.  It can be used on small areas that are not suitable for traditional liposuction, and using the laser can help to contract the skin, meaning that you are not left with loose folds of skin in the treated areas.  This makes laser liposuction the most appropriate form of the treatment for anyone whose skin is losing its elasticity.Dr. Marwan Khalifeh, MD 2

There are risks associated with any form of cosmetic surgery, and laser lipo is no different.  Be sure to discuss these risks with Dr. Khalifeh before your procedure, and the initial consultation is the ideal time to do this.  It is also your opportunity to ask any questions that you might have.

The risks involved in undergoing laser liposuction include the possibility of burns from the use of the laser.  The process works by causing a small injury to the skin, stimulating the growth of collagen and elastin, which are both needed for the flexibility and structure of the skin.  New growth of these will tighten the skin.  The other effect that the laser has is to liquefy fat.  This is a non-surgical form of liposuction that does not involve the use of needles to remove fat from the body, so it is non-invasive.

In order to achieve the best possible results from your laser liposuction procedure, it is important that you choose an experienced and qualified surgeon.  This is important because there is the possibility of burns from the use of the laser.  Dr. Khalifeh is highly qualified and extremely experienced in performing laser liposuction procedures.
